This is downright spooky....or cool, depending on your interpretation. And depending on what happens in the next couple days.
If you watched the debate last night you might remember that Bush seemed to want to talk to Kerry for a couple extra seconds after they shook hands. I didn't think anything of it at the time more than "That's weird..." But now some interesting stuff is circulating on the net. Here's a summary of the video, from a comment on punditguy:
At 1:29:18 in the video the candidates approach. You can clearly see Bush say, "Where you gonna be?". Kerry's back is to the camera so you can't see his response. Bush then can be seen saying, "We'll find ya."The following is a comment on Kerry's blog from a deaf individual who has a lip-reading interpretation:Note that Bush made the point of pulling Kerry back as Kerry was walking away to ask him the question.
anyway, I am new tonight... as you may not have seen me before in here.. just a FYI that I am deaf here and can read lips okay..You can watch the actual video, although in low-res, over at The Daily Recycler.at the end of debate where Kerry and Bush shook hands.. Bush was asking Kerry, Can I talk to you later tonight? Kerry said sure then Bush said where would you be? I missed what Kerry said.
I wondered what Bush wanted to talk to Kerry about??

Check out the earnestness on Bush's face: "Where you gonna be?" "We'll find you."
What on earth could Bush want to talk to Kerry about?
I already found it very strange, the first time I saw that exchange. Especially the way Bush pulled Kerry back: this is not a "thank you, see you at my inauguration" type thing. My guess is big news in the War on Terror, perhaps bad news, like confirmation that the Chechen rebels are actually here in the U.S. and may attack a school or public facility before the election. Perhaps brokering an agreement for a "ceasefire" of sorts if such a thing happens? Who knows...The only reason that I can think of for Bush to ask Kerry for a one-on-one right after the debate (if that is indeed what he asked for) is that something urgent happened for which it is crucial to have a bipartisan discussion at the highest level, which he felt he had to ask Kerry personally.
First thing that popped in my mind is a national security alert, but given Bush's demeanour when he spoke with reporters on Air Force One after the debate that seems unlikely.
My completely unsubstantiated theory: the October surprise: Osama has been caught. Bush would love to announce this asap, of course. However, he cannot do this without giving Kerry the heads-up. Also, to avoid it being seen as a Republican trick he will want to make an effort to share the credit in a "this is not just a triumph for me, but for all Americans"-type way.
Where is Oliver Stone when you need him?
Zoef, London
But it is fun to speculate what may have been said.
Posted by doug at October 14, 2004 04:13 PM | TrackBackMy wife, also uncanny at reading lips (what is it with women and reading lips???), immediately caught on to that at the end of the debate. Of course, I noticed the unusually substantive nature of Bush's comment to Kerry after tha debate but needed my wife to interpret what he said. I like Zoef's theory and would love it to be true (get that mass murderer in the electric chair!), but I doubt it. More likely, Bush wanted to iron out something or coordinate something regarding further campaigning. Who knows?
Posted by: john fowles at October 15, 2004 10:21 AMVery interesting indeed! Wouldn't it be great to get that Oct Suprise. Maybe Kerry is running a little low on funds and decided to sell the receipe for ketchup to the Bush's. That way they will have the market on baked beans and hot dog condiments, two things every b-b-que needs.
But seriously, that is an interesting theory. We have all wondered if something might happen with the war on terror before the elections. Haven't we all also been wondering if al Qaeda would do something to disrupt the election? who knows...
