Ban the swastika?
Apparently some German lawmakers, seizing an opportunity provided by the outrage at Prince Harry’s wardrobe malfunction, are suggesting that there be a Europe-wide ban on Nazi insignia.
“All of Europe suffered under Nazi crimes in the past, therefore, it would be logical for Nazi symbols to be banned all over Europe,” said Silvana Koch-Merin, vice president of the Liberal group in the European Parliament.[source]
It seems to me that the best hope for not repeating history is remembering it. Remembrance doesn’t imply that honoring (or wearing the insignia in public) would be necessary.
If this ban simply bans favorable public displays of Nazi insignia then I would be inclined to applaud the effort. But I can’t see the benefit of trying to outlaw symbols (anywhere and everywhere) associated with Nazism.

if they ban all public displays of the swastika, somebody’s gonna have to go around europe and tear down a heck of a lot of bush=hitler posters.
it is a sad day for democracy when effigies of conservatives will no longer be permitted to appear alongside the traditional swastika.
I’m all for it. It’s too bad we can’t also ban the hammer and sickle symbol of Soviet communism, which is only slightly less villainous than Naziism.

I think you all need to read a little more into history before ranting and raving about should be banned. For one the swastika is a symbol of good luck, way before Hitler’s time. And the Sickle and hammer doesn’t have anything to do with communism (which by the way is the greatestg government on paper), it has to do with mother Russia and the union of its strong work ethics!

A banning symbols and speech associated with a totalitarian government is totalitarian.
The cycle repeats.

Hey I just wanted to say that I’m in India at the moment and here there are swastikas everywhere. the swastika here is a sign of peace and love for your fellow man. Why ban it, it only means something negative when you take it out of context. next time you see a swastika on a Neo nazis arm; smile at them, give them a hug, and tell them that their love for all races admirable. Lets not ban the swatika, lets change its meaning back to what it was originally.
