Hey, that isn't a bad idea... getting the government to pay for everything. I am going to move down there and live out of my car and wait for the next one. Then, when it is all over, then I collect all my money!! Oh sure, I will be endagering the lives of police, military, and rescue workers when they have to come find my body. But hey, I will be 20,000 richer! Yes!

I don't know why ANYONE displaced my Katrina should get one red cent from the government. If they are already receiving federal financial assistance (food stamps, etc) fine, they should continue to receive assistance, perhaps with an extension...but money just because of their bad luck of living in Katrina's path?

Puh-lease!

Tragedy strikes thousands of Americans every single day.

What of the family where a parent is killed in an auto accident?

What of the family whose home is lost to a fire?

What of the young child who loses their sight due to disease?

Is the government to offer anyone and everyone large sums of money because unfortunate events befall them?

As Posner points out:

Just because a person loses his house in a flood that destroys hundreds of thousands of other houses, rather than in a fire that destroys just his house, is no reason for the taxpayer to reimburse him for the loss.
