Elias Bermudez: Immigration Idiot

Given the popularity of my recent immigration and Alberto Gonzales: Idiot posts, I’m thinking of starting an “all-encompassingly Immigration Idiot of the Day” post. Don’t know if that will happen, but here would be my first candidate: Elias Bermudez, president of the appropriately named Inmigrantes Sin Fronteras (Immigrants Without Borders).

And if we were to start an “all-encompassingly Leader with Cajones” daily post, my first nominees would be Sheriff Joe Arpaio and County Attorney Andrew Thomas from Maricopa County, Arizona.

Ariz. Posse to Round Up Illegal Immigrants

Thomas maintains illegal immigrants who pay smugglers to enter the United States are committing conspiracy to smuggle and can therefore be prosecuted under the state law.

A Los Angeles attorney brought into the case by the Mexican Consul General’s Office in Phoenix filed another motion claiming Thomas and Arpaio are violating state and federal law and are using the conspiracy charges to control illegal immigration, which is the federal government’s job.

Arpaio said the motions don’t worry him.

“I get sued when I go to the toilet. You think I’m worried about it?” he said. “If they think I’m going to slow down because of these threats, I’ve got news for them - I’m not going to slow down. I’ll do more of it.”

In response to coming wave of illegal immigrant arrests, my nominee for all-encompassingly’s first Immigration Idiot of the Day, Elias Bermudez, “questions the legality of the immigration posse itself”:

“It is racial profiling,” he said. “They don’t follow guys that are blond and blue-eyed.”

What?!?! The outrage! You mean that the Sheriff isn’t hunting down the thousands of Swedish men crossing the Mexican/U.S. border?

Simply put, Elias Bermudez is an immigration idiot.

It really just comes down to the critical point defining this issue.

    Right and wrong.

In a quote appearing today, with reference to inmates learning English while in prison, Elias Bermudez said the following:

Elias Bermudez, chief executive of advocacy group Immigrants Without Borders, said he believes Arpaio is “not doing this for the good of the inmate” but instead to “showcase” himself.

Regardless of what the motivation is, isn’t it more important that inmates are learning English?

    To Fall:

So, you’re saying that in Mexico there is no right and wrong?

I can not say that I don’t have some empathy for illegals trying to make a better life. HOWEVER, it is necessary the the US make the possibilities of the so called American dream for those of us here legally. We have many poor and disenfranchised here and our resources need to go to them. We are not Mexico’s keeper and the more they protest in our street and claim they are being persecuted (when they choose to come here) the harder my view becomes toward the issue.

  6. I agree, Elias Bermudez is without doubt an idiot. He is the one that created the Joe Arpaio picture and circulated it. Prosecute the idiot!

  7. Summer

I just looked Elias Bermudez curious where and who he is. I found this about him
One of the first to serve as mayor of San Luis, he is the only mayor to do hard time. He served 18 months in a federal prison after pleading guilty in 1996 to laundering drug profits. Prior to that, he served six months for a bribery charge……. and came to the US illegally. Get rid of the loser!

The U.S. is credited for helping those in need around the world, and pats its back for their humanitarian efforts. The media’s focus is on the negative side to immigration, and it is focused on Mexican immigration. There are much more positive immigration effects to the U.S and the Mexican Nationals. I am a U.S. born Mexican and a 2nd generation citizen. My family is very successful in colleges and hold high positions in schools, and businesses. Many of us have higher education degrees. Mexicans are looking to better themselves in this country, to which is our home country because it was part of Mexico just a short time ago. You can change the name, but the roots will be the same. Spanish has been spoken here for many hundreds of years, this is parts of U.S.’s native tongue. I agree with Steve in that it is good to learn english, even if it is in jail. The irony is while the government is helping them in the jails, there was Prop. 300 which makes Adult Education Classes offered only to citizens. So while citizens are complaining about Mexican Nationals not speaking english ( many of them want to learn), they cannot because of Prop. 300. Is that a grandfather clause? To Stand: I thought we were talking about the U.S, not Mexico? We can only change who WE are. Mexico and its government is not within our reach. I agree there are severe issues needing dealing-with in Mexico, that is causing the migration of many Mexican Nationals to this country. In Mexico the right and wrongs change the higher up you go in class and political power. Immigration, simply put, is survival. To Lesa Morgan: There are many opportunities provided its citizens by the government to insure its succesfulness. Many of these funds are exploited by its citizens who have not changed. People have to Want to change. I see many sucessful formerly Mexican Nationals, who are given the opportunity and do make a success of their lives. Should they protest the stealing of their land? As the American Indians, who got taken from their lands to give to white settlers; Mexican land was taken, from generations passed down lands, to settlers to habitate. Now we who should have land from our grandfathers grandfathers, grandfathers, have none, and are living in the lower classes of todays society. If you want to talk about rights, lets talk. To Summer: Elias Bermudez is an imperfect man as everyone on this earth is. He was bringing an awareness to the racism, discrimination, and civil terrorism evidenced by the actions of the sherriff. In his efforts to “clean” the communities, all of his efforts, not what is coming from his mouth, is directed towards Mexican Nationals. They are undocumented, not retarded any one can plainly see the writing on the wall. Also, I liked how you researched him! There are many people who are in his position, Martha Stewart (who ingaged in a white collar crime, and exploited people for her greater good), cops can be cops and be involved in some criminal activity in their past, and we dont criminalize them. Many take bribery as well, and they are still in office. Look at the former President Bill Clinton, he lied and said he didnt do it, he did. He did not step down, and a poll was taken to see if the people felt he should, and they didnt. When the issue is of race and in particular Mexicans, give him the lock and key right? So biased! You like facts, research the information youll find out where I got this information.I took college courses that are enlightening regarding these issues, which is were I got my information from. Black slaves also had to fight for their citizenship, and where once illegal. We werent brought here, we were born here. The border crossed us, we didnt cross the border. I could not read this and NOT respond. We are eating what the media feeds us and not learning for ourselves. We are using catch phrases that fit our form, and in the interest of being right, we dont look at the real issue. The Mexican Nationals are being bullied and dehumanized for being. In all reality they will not stop coming whether they are wanted or unwanted. There needs to be a compromise so there can be a solution. Neither side will be fully happy with the outcome of the compromise. We need to call it for what it is, racism.

  9. [...] the article is here officer slain; gunman takes hostage, is killed. for (what is apparently) someone’s real opinion justifying the aztlan reconquista of the american southwest (and calling opposition to it “racism”) see this comment from erika rodriguez. The issue is not immigration. It is ileagal immigration
and all the problems associated with it. Our schools, hospitals, and jails are full. The Big Corporations of Amaerica are getting richer from the cheap labor.
My fellow Americans, Stop hiring the illeagal and save America before it is too late.
I am an experienced carpenter and cannot get fair wage and benefits due to all the workers trhat are here illegeally that will do the job for half of what it is worth.
This issue may not be directly affecting you now, but just wait.It will and sooner than you think.

Esto de inmigracion ilegal es un problema del cual toda la culpa al gobierno de Mexico

    Vicente,

Y sí. Es mucho más fácil mandar gente acá que resolver problemas graves en su propio pais. Lamentable para todos, la verdad.

  13. imigration is a very important topic for the world and people like elias bermudez should be appreciated not be called an immigration idiot

To Erika Rodriguez: You may be successful in college and you seem articulate, however, SPARE ME! Mexicans aren’t the only ppl in the world looking to better themselves, and the others that do, follow the law of the land, LEARN ENGLISH without Prop 300, myself included; and your Mexican immigration advocates, i.e. Bermudez, should be funding the English language teaching. Why would Mexicans want to learn English when their children learn it and then translate, or everyone is catering to them by having Spanish spoken at the business. How about the businesses that have no English signs in sight? Seems like discrimination against the non Spanish speakers to me. Don’t they want my business? STEALING of their land? Lady, we fought a war and won it, and also paid $15 million dollars which were once a part of Mexico; and if you want to say, “it used to be Mexico” well, before it was Mexico, it belonged to SPAIN. Also, do you try to live in the previous house you owned bc you used to own it? So, if you want to go that route, if the land is given back to Mexico then by all means give it back to Spain. I mean, that IS who it USED to belong to didn’t it?? You don’t hear the British, French or Russians lamenting the sales of their former lands here; the 13 original colonies, Louisiana Purchase, and Alaska respectively. Yes we took the land of the Native Americans and it was wrong in how it was taken; but no less wrong than what the Spanish Conquistadores did out west and in South America. Which, if you didn’t know, is how your race, the Mestizo, was created. MEXICAN is NOT a race, just as AMERICAN isn’t a race. It’s a NATIONALITY! RACISM? Mexican laws not any better, i.e. no illegal alien hiring, armed southern border–what’s the matter, don’t want the Hondurans, Guatemalans, etc to compete? Restricted land ownership to non citizens, proficiency in Spanish required to get citizenship, etc. Don’t be a hypocrite and see what’s really going on…Illegals inundating the jails, human smuggling by YOUR OWN PPL, schools and hospitals being burdened by illegals wanting a handout. Who’s paying for this? I will give the 1500 or so Mexicans who line up outside the consulate in Mexico City to come to the US, credit for trying to do it the right way; not just buck the system, cut in line and think we owe them. What’s worse is these ppl have the nerve to say they’re exploited and under appreciated. They exploit themselves by working for low wages instead of competitve living wage bc they want to undercut the next guy to get work and who’s going to appreciate social burdens? Are you? Why don’t you petition the Mexican government to stop corruption and sponging off of America ($20 billion + sent annually to Mexico from the illegals here). Last but not least, what part of ILLEGAL do you NOT understand?

  15. Levada

A post script for Erika: If there were a robbery committed and witnesses say they saw 4 “green” guys (don’t want to use any particular race) who would the cops be looking for? “Purple” guys? NO! Remember, Erika, there is a multitude of races here, and well, gee, I wonder why they aren’t targeted? Perhaps it’s bc they’re law abiding citizens. How about the Chinese who come here illegally via shipping containers? They’re laying low as not to get caught so they CAN try to live the better life they came here for; not waving giant Chinese flags and speaking Chinese in marches demanding their “rights”. So, if you pick up a newspaper, watch the news, etc, who’s committing the crimes? Let’s see, “Teens get shot at party”, “Drophouses…” “Woman dragged to her death by illegal..”, “so and so gets caught using fake social security #”(btw isn’t that identity theft???)are committed by these Mexican nationals. Sure, there are crimes committed by other races, but who seems to be committing the majority? Remember, Mexican is NOT a race!

  16. Levada

    to Lesa Morgan: Well said!

  17. How about a third political party that holds the Democrats and Republicans accountable? Force the issue of illegal immigration, arming the border with National Guard soldiers and building a physical barrier to prevent more illegal crossings. Continue the crackdown on illegal immigrants commiting indentity theft crimes, crackdown on employers who hire illegal immigrants and charge fines of $100,000 or more per illegal immigrant employed, etc. The Arizona Sheriff is a case in point that cracking down on lawbreakers causes them to leave and find another place to live. If the US as a whole cracks down, the only place left for them will be Canada or Mexico.

  18. Jessica Tufts

Bermudez recently said that people are coming into the USA without documents “because this country does not have a legal mechanism to seek work with documents.”

That would be news to the millions of people who have legally emigrated to the USA! Idiot.

As for the LA lawyer who thinks controlling immigration “is the federal government’s job” — the feds have a thing called the Drug Enforcement Agency, too. Does that mean that local authorities should never do any enforcement of drug laws? Idiot.
