EU: Doha Negotiations US Fault
The Doha round of trade talks have completely broken down. Let’s be clear, this is entirely the fault of both the US and EU insistance on starving Third World farmers through the use of domestic agricultural subsidies.
Of course, the EU representative doesn’t see it that way. She claims that the whole kerfuffle is due to US “inflexibility.” Oh, do tell. Especially since the EU (and France in particular) is exceptionally protective of obscenely ineffecient farming.
The EU came to Geneva prepared to do what you have to do in a negotiation. The main task was to explore others’ flexibilities. We were prepared to walk the extra mile if a final deal was within reach. Unfortunately, the US preferred to stand still.
It is truly sad that the US doesn’t take the lead on this.
Poverty kills. It kills more people than war. It kills more people than AIDS. Ending these subsidies would be a huge leap forward in helping millions around the globe.

Doug,
After I’d thought I’d never find common ground with you, I must say I couldn’t agree with you more on this issue. Amen.
