Why hasn’t the left disowned Cindy Sheehan yet? But perhaps we can be grateful for their adoration of her.
She has probably been a stronger force for encouraging sane Americans to support the war in Iraq than a lot of other things…
“Why hasn’t the left disowned Cindy Sheehan yet?”
as someone on the left, I wonder the same damn thing.
Sane? Maybe you would call the 40% or so of us who believe in bankrupting a nation to fight a war based on lies sane.
that was hilarious. i cannot speak.
You think that’s funny. Take a look at the crackpots trying to run the show (http://www.awolbush.com/whoserved.html).
that link tells me lots of democrats served in the military, while lots of republicans didn’t. i appreciate the information, but could you explain something to me? why are you (presumably a democrat)–and the people behind awolbush.com–so proud of all your party members’ service in the military, while a major tenet of your political ideology seems to be labeling everyone in the US military either a baby killer, a rapist, a stupid gun-weilding automaton, a redneck….(i could go on).
was the military a respectable when all the democrats served in it? or was it just as despicable (your party’s characterization) then as it is now? if the latter, then why are you bragging about them serving in it? (if the former, why do you people give our armed forces so much crap now?)
going back to the subject of the post (before the threadjacking) i am still LMAO. as someone who has both fasted on occasion and consumed smoothies on occasion, i have to say ms. sheehan’s smoothie fast is hardly a fast. i hope newspeople everywhere will stop reporting it as such.
I’m not sure where you are getting your information. I haven’t called anyone a baby killer recently. Actually I never have. Now to believe that the men responsible for the rape and murder of the woman in Iraq should go unpunished is subhuman. I hope that is not what you are saying. Redneck…well if the shoe fits.
Where have the democrats characterized the military as despicable? Just because we don’t countenance murder, rape, pillaging…(I could go on), doesn’t mean we blame the military. Just kidding. We do, however, probably disagree on the treatment of prisoners of war and whether or not we should honor our commitments to the Geneva Convention. Glad to see the Supreme Court shoot Bush down on Gitmo.
The point of that website is that our country’s current leaders do not respect those who are giving their blood, sweat, and tears over there in Iraq. They don’t have the slightest clue about the sacrifices put forward by our men and women in uniform because they cowarded out of their duty to serve the country. They also do not understand the suffering of someone such as Cindy Sheehan. I hope you don’t pull a Coultergeist and say that Cindy is glad that her son is dead.
I’m glad to hear you have fasted. I have too, when I was a believer. There are many different notions about fasting as I am sure you are aware. If Cindy wants to not eat solid food, that’s fine by me and counts as a fast (a sacrifice, something entirely unfamiliar to George Bush). Who’s next on your list? Catholics? Are you going to knock them for eating fish during their Lent fast?
Anonymous,
I assume that you voted for Bob Dole in 1996 when he ran against Bill Clinton. As you know, Dole is a decorated WWII veteran, while Clinton avoided serving in Vietnam.
That was the best thing about Bob Dole. To tell you the truth, I don’t know who I voted for then.
Yeah Bill was a draft dodger like George W.; Cheney, Frist, De Lay, Lott, Limbaugh. You really got me there.
my point is, why is the left at the same time proud of the military and also so embarrassed by it? like my previous questions, this isn’t rhetorical. but i guess you can continue to not answer it.
because cindy sheehan served in the military? the awolbush list was not full of military families, it referenced people who had served, themselves, in the military. i don’t think its fair to say republican leaders don’t understand what cindy sheehan is going through based on the awolbush list. your friend will have to put up a list of what political leaders have lost children fighting in the US armed forces.
do catholics put out press releases announcing “hi. we are going to be fasting for two months. we will be holding press conferences in front of satan’s house at regular intervals to update you on our misery.” (but then proceed to nourish themselves with fish tacos (or fish smoothies))?
Your point is nonsensical. The left is certainly proud of the military and those that serve. Because we disapprove of the action of some within the military you make this sweeping generalization. We are also not proud of the inappropriate use of the military (a la Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz, and the other cast members of “We Weren’t Soldiers†–you have to admit, that was funny). That said, you can see that I have been answering your question. You have this preconceived notion that you can’t get out of your head. I am (We are –AWOL Bush folks) dispelling that myth for you. Democrats can be patriots!
Of course the administration doesn’t understand Sheehan’s suffering. If it did, it would never have lied to rush us into war. Cheney never would have leaned on Tenet to come up with the “slam dunk†case. I don’t know how you guys still defend these people. Isn’t there some scripture about the liar being thrust down to hell? Wish I could see the look on Bush’s face when he’s chained to Osama down there stoking the fires.
C’mon, I asked you not to pull a Coultergeist. Yes, Cindy is just this dumb mother who is a publicity hound. She didn’t really care about her son. She’s protesting because she wants to be a star. This kind of thought process is really twisted.
i didn’t say cindy sheehan is glad her son is dead. i said her fast isn’t a fast. you didn’t respond to that point, but called it “pulling a coultergeist” to even mention cindy sheehan’s name without fawning over her like an unimpeachable icon. sounds like coulter has you people pegged pretty good: i can’t even point out the idiocy in something she is doing without being scolded and told she is above all criticism.
now we’re really getting into old arguments where the majority of americans have said they disagree with you. see the 2004 presidential election.
but if you want to go down this road, why don’t you tell us how many democrats who served in the military also voted to go to war in iraq? (don’t answer that. we already know it was lots of them)
also answer whether those who served in the military and are now in congress have the military’s best interests at heart (eg john kerry voting against body armor for troops).
don’t tell me with a general statement. show me with real things democrats have done that are patriotic.
having a democrat say “democrats are patriots!” is like having a convicted sex offender promise me, “i’m great with children.” his version of “great with children” is very different from my own.
i’m hardly defending them. i’m really just making fun of two things: (1) the left’s odd love-hate relationship with the US military and (2) cindy sheehan’s fake fast.
And I answered you. Her fast is a fast as there are many definitions for fast. I pointed out the Catholic example and you summarily dismissed it. The manner in which you ripped into Cindy’s fast implied that she is nothing but a media hound which is exactly what Coulter did with the 9/11 widows who don’t share her world view.
Coulter has us pegged pretty good. You are right. I gleefully watched the twin towers fall. Don’t stoop to Coulter’s stupidity. By the way, why is Coulter, who by the way I can never tell if she’s working or walking, an unimpeachable icon in your eyes? She may also be a transvestite (got some pretty bad adam’s apple going on there).
Winning the election by a few mere percentage points is hardly a solid majority. However, I would say that the roughly 60% or so Americans who now say Iraq was a mistake is a solid majority. It surely will be an interesting midterm election.
Many of the democrats who served in the military voted for Iraq. This was based on faulty intelligence. The intelligence was generated by George Tenet under pressure from Cheney and Co. You need to see the Frontline investigation on Cheney’s private war. Of course who wouldn’t vote for war when Sadam had reconstituted his biological, chemical, and nuclear warfare machine? That’s why I said I don’t know how you can support liars. Again the scripture about lying and hell.
The John Kerry argument really is old. Bush also didn’t support the military with body armor. We all know about the complexities of congressional votes (i.e., everything else that goes with the vote). Your argument doesn’t hold water.
We convicted sex offenders aside for the moment (although I think Rush has a few sexual problems himself) how come dissent is patriotic for a Republican and not for a Democrat? Sounds like a double standard. Let me tell you why it is patriotic to not support the war. It’s running up our debt (especially with Bush’s tax breaks). It has neutered our presence on the world stage (end of Cowboy diplomacy I think as Time puts it). While we’re in such a position watch out for the rogue states not to mention the ones that have trashed our manufacturing economy and are poised to do the same with our knowledge economy. Let Bush just try to affect the trade deficit with China. What can be more patriotic than trying to keep America as the greatest nation on earth (although this is really difficult with the dolts we have in the white house and congress right now)?
I’ve already shown you the left has no hate relationship with the military just the morons in the civilian leadership positions. The military is doing the best it can with the sorry situation dealt it by Bush and co. Finally, Cindy Sheehan’s definition of fast is as good as yours.
May I respond with a quote from cinema?
“I have nipples, Greg, can you milk me?”
I mean, honestly, you sound like Ben Stiller (Greg) explaining to his future father-in-law how “anything” can be milked.
Anything is a fast!
I just finished eating curry, rice, and a garden salad. Pray tell, what fast can I qualify for today? Also, I skipped ice cream after dinner, if that helps the qualification process.
Travis was clearly out of line. Travis: Don’t you remember that Kerry voted for the additional funds before voting against them?
I’m not sure that Travis ever said this. If he did he would be dead wrong. The Democrats, especially those on the national scene, love to embrace patriotic folk like Michael Moore. And Cindy Sheehan loves Hugo Chavez, a great friend of America.
In your next comment, I want a Freudian analysis of Bush’s tax cuts.
Well, the Iraq situation now is hard because the Islamic terrorists are playing a full court press and the United States public doesn’t like it. Fortunately, Iraqi troops are playing more and more of a role in taking over security, but not at the rate US public opinion would like.
The problem I see with leaving Iraq hinges more on the current situation than on claims of past error. It is actually about long term US “presence on the world stage.” We should never run in the face of terror.
Wikipedia has a great definition of terrorism:
“Terrorism refers to a strategy of using violence, or threat of violence to generate fear, cause disruption, and ultimately, to bring about compliance with specific political, religious, ideological, and personal demands. The targets of terrorist attacks typically are not the individuals who are killed, injured, or taken hostage, but rather the societies to which these individuals belong.”
The Israelis are showing us right now what to do with terrorists.
Doug:
I mean, honestly, you sound like Ben Stiller (Greg) explaining to his future father-in-law how “anything†can be milked.
Well then I guess a Catholic’s fast of fish on Friday must not fall in line with your definition of fast. I think about a billion people disagree with you. Again you wouldn’t know because you Republicans don’t know anything about sacrifice.
“Travis was clearly out of line…â€
He was out of line. Bush and Cheney didn’t fund them properly either, faked the intelligence data, didn’t have a clue about the insurgency (last throes…). I could go on and on. To blame Kerry for anything is absurd.
Really the flip flop argument is old. Bush flip flopped on the Kyoto protocol. So big deal, people change their minds. What’s funny is how the flip flops have been forced on Bush because he is too stupid to figure them out (e.g., global warming, mission accomplished, no two-way talks, etc. etc. etc.). Again, why do you guys defend a liar?
“I’m not sure that Travis ever said this…â€
Michael Moore is more of a patriot than liars like Bush and Cheney will ever be. Those that enslave our children because of their own greed deserve to be called traitors. Have you checked out how much you owe on the national debt lately? What about your kids? As I mentioned before, we are becoming enslaved to those financing the debt. That’s less and less likely to be ourselves (read Fishman’s China Inc.).
How about a Freudian analysis of people like Dole and Limbaugh? Either Democrats have no problems there or they at least have the sense not to say they have ED. The important analysis of the Bush tax cuts has already been given (how much has the national debt increased under him? What is our trade deficit with China?). With Hugo Chavez, I think it’s more important to figure out why his people love him than Cindy Sheehan.
Ryan:
“Well, the Iraq situation now is hard because the Islamic terrorists are playing a full court press…â€
Really, and what were they doing before, half court press? I’ve already told you how our presence in the world has been neutered by the Iraq war and other bungles by Bush and Co. I can’t tell what you’re arguing with the wikipedia definition. Cut and run. I showed you a list of the biggest cut and runners ever. Those wonderful republicans who avoided their duty to serve in the armed forces. Maybe where you guys come from when you make a mistake you stick with it until it’s an even bigger mistake. Where I come from you fix the mistake.
You’re right about the Israelis. They are really showing us. Let’s see, how long have they been showing us (a little over 3000 years). They’ve been wiped off the map a few times too. They are really making progress right now aren’t they? Most believe it will have to come down to a prisoner exchange as happened last time. But go ahead and believe that they are really whipping up on those terrorists and that this time they (the terrorists) will sue for peace.
Anon,
1. Check out Code Pink’s fasting guidelines. These are the feminist nuts behind this fast/rolling fast nonsense. Even by their standard’s Cindy Sheehan’s “fast” is a joke.
2. Has Bush accepted the Kyoto protocol? Uh, no.
3. Michael Moore hates America and Americans. (The underlined blue text is a hyperlink. You can click on it and visit a page with additional information and evidence.)
4. You’re obsession with “ED” is amusing.
5. You present a compelling argument for mandatory military service and/or a requirement that any civilian who oversees military affairs must have served previously.
6. Yes. Israel has been fighting Islamic terrorism for “a little over” 3,000 years. Quite a feat considering Mohammed was born around 570 AD, “a little under” 3,000 years ago.
mr. anan, would you call jared the subway guy’s diet a fast? if not, is it not a fast because he doesn’t call it a fast? don’t you think it’s a little ridiculous to allow people such leeway with important definitions?
noooo. i didn’t summarily dismiss it. i kindly provided an example to show how catholics fasting under the cindy sheehan method would sound ridiculous. rather than “summarily,” i would prefer to call what i did “quick” and “efficient.”
i didn’t say that. i said you have taken the ludicrous position that cindy sheehan cannot be criticized.
how dare you say that! her
sisterbrother was a transvestite and died of AIDS! she may, therefore, never be criticized for her gender identity.but you’ve missed the key part: it’s still a MAJORITY
mr. anan, you’ve certainly got me all tangled up in your logic. you’ve just claimed there are many definitions of “fast” (including, apparently, “eating more healthfully”) but while you expand that definition beyond recognition, you’re now narrowing the definition of “majority” so winning doesn’t even count anymore? because it wasn’t “solid” enough? what happened to second place is the first loser? you lost. you’ve lost several times in a row now.
a lot of french now think letting the US make the louisiana purchase was a mistake, too. mistakes suck. even george bush admitted something to the effect of the intelligence being wrong. you put the blame on him but (again returning to arguments that have long been worn out) clinton and congressional democrats made even stronger statements about iraq and saddam than some of the bush administration’s statements. everybody seems to be wrong now. it’s horrible.
but that’s why we’ve got to get saddam a good legal defense team and get him off the hook for genocide. maybe he can team up with ahmedinejad in iran and they can form a new, super-peaceful islamic state where there is no death, killing, or WMD. i can almost picture it now.
i don’t need a scripture to tell me that lying is bad. lying is bad.
does the scripture say “people who believe liars or give aid and comfort to liars will be thrust down to hell?” if so, that would make me a little more instructive for me. then i’d wan to find out who lied, so i would be sure not to support them.
on a related note, did you defend bill clinton during his brief bout with perjury?
and not to nitpick, but since we’re getting back into the nineties, how can you not remember who you voted for in 1996? were there a lot more candidates that year than there normally are?
nothing. let’s have fish smoothies for everyone!
Amin:
“so the definition of “fast†is: whenever someone says s/he is fasting, it’s a fast?â€
Sure why not. Did God die and let you decide what a fast is? I missed that memo. If someone feels they are sacrificing something and they call it a fast, who am I to disagree.
Jared the subway guy’s diet would be a fast for me but I know that it would do me a lot of good. Lot of research out there showing caloric restriction slows down the aging process.
I haven’t taken the ludicrous position that Cindy Sheehan can’t be criticized. I’ve taken the position that your criticism (a la Coultergeist) is ludicrous. Cindy believes she is fasting and making a statement. Who are you to tell her that she isn’t especially since you’ve been affected as much as she has been by this war?
“how dare you say that! her brother was a transvestite and died of AIDS! she is therefore beyond criticism for her gender identity.â€
Now you get the point! I still want to know if she’s working or walking. Now you see when I criticize someone you respect how it hits a nerve.
“but you’ve missed the key part: it’s still a MAJORITYâ€
You’ve missed the key part. It was a majority. Ain’t no more! Again let’s see what happens in the midterms. Maybe you guys should get Pete Coors to move to some State where Republicans are in trouble.
“mr. anan, you’ve certainly got me all tangled up in your logic.â€
At least my arguments are logical. See above.
“a lot of french now think…â€
The difference was Clinton had faulty intelligence. Bush created it. Watch the frontline special. Cheney pushed on George Tenet to produce the intelligence the administration wanted (i.e., the slam dunk case). Bush even knew the intelligence about the yellow cake was flawed before he gave his state of the union address. He knew all of the intelligence was flawed. He is a liar. Watch the frontline special. Stop removing your brain from your head and believing as only a right wing nut job does. Develop some critical thinking skills.
“but that’s why we’ve got to get saddam a good legal defense team and get him off the hook for genocide.â€
If you don’t understand the significance of the Nuremberg trials and how they benefited the US (despite the risk) you really should study World History.
“then i’d wan to find out who lied, so i would be sure not to support them.â€
Bush lied. I’ll get rid of anyone responsible for the leak, the yellow cake example, the aluminum centrifuge tubes, etc. etc. etc. Critical thinking comes in handy.
“on a related note, did you defend bill clinton his brief bout with perjury?â€
No I didn’t. He should have been impeached. So should Bush for lying and costing the American people so much.
“nothing. let’s have fish smoothies for everyone!â€
Great. You buy.
Doug:
“1. Check out Code Pink’s fasting guidelines. These are the feminist nuts behind this fast/rolling fast nonsense. Even by their standard’s Cindy Sheehan’s “fast†is a joke.â€
Explain the logic. You give credibility to what Code Pink says and then you call them feminist nuts. Explain the incongruity.
“2. Has Bush accepted the Kyoto protocol? Uh, no.â€
Uh where were you during the 2000 elections. He said he would support the Kyoto Protocol. Again, he lied.
“3. Michael Moore hates America and Americans. (The underlined blue text is a hyperlink. You can click on it and visit a page with additional information and evidence.)â€
Right wing propaganda. You have to ignore this stuff. Stick to the facts to develop critical thinking skills.
“4. You’re obsession with “ED†is amusing.â€
No actually, I find hypocritical junkies like Rush Limbaugh amusing.
“5. You present a compelling argument for mandatory military service and/or a requirement that any civilian who oversees military affairs must have served previously.â€
That’s funny. I don’t remember doing that. But one could imagine that civilian leadership might consult one who has served instead of making decisions based on what Karl Rove’s brain says that day.
“6. Yes. Israel has been fighting Islamic terrorism for “a little over†3,000 years. Quite a feat considering Mohammed was born around 570 AD, “a little under†3,000 years ago.â€
I don’t think you read above. The wikipedia entry was for terrorism not Islamic terrorism. You seem to have an fetish for Islam. Something you care to tell us. I was actually assuming that Moses came around before 1000 BC. I may be wrong, I’m not a scriptorian like you Doug. Anyway, you missed my point. They have been fighting terrorism for more than 3000 years.
mr. anan, you’ve got this weird sense of humor. kind of like a friend of mine named steve. do you know him?
Travis,
You got it. You must’ve known from the alias Lester Goozman. When nobody said anything, I thought I would play it out a while. I did try to not sound like myself. I even said I wasn’t a believer to see if I could throw you off. I think you’ve known all along.
Sorry for the threadjack. I have a grant due on Aug. 1. Stress makes me hypersensitive.
Carry on with the Cindy bashing. I won’t bother you.
I do love Doug’s Zidane vs. Castro though! My Cuban colleague and I had great laughs at that.
