   I am remiss for not commenting before now, but these are great icons, Travis. It is hard to pick out just one to put on MWP. They are all good and a tip of the hat to Kerri! Job well done!

   I am looking for a typical chilean wedding which took place in Santiago, Chile on November 11,1967 at the Iglesia de San Francisco. It was a very notorious wedding.Two very famous dancers, Mario Aguirre Bustos and Carmen Orellana united their lives in communion on this date. Don Francisco covered their wedding and then conducted an interview with them. Why is it that I cannot find a single article nor information on-line? Mario Aguirre Bustos was the co-founded of the first Ballet Folklorico Nacional de Chile. Should not that be important to write and be proud about? Carmen Rosa Orellana de Aguirre was the first dancer for the group el “Kurubun.” Where is her biography? Why is it that they have not been given the recognition they deserve? They also made a film in Chile, directed by Juan Pablo Donosio. They were also Cueca champions more than once at the Tugar Tugar Cueca competion. Mario Aguirre was a virtuoso Cueca dancer. Have you seen any footage of their performances? They performed many times for Channel 13. Mr. Aguirre also was a professor for the Universidad de Chile. Not only was he a folkloric dancer but also a “folklorogo.”

   I am inquirering more information because I have heard so much about them. I have also seen some news paper articles;however, nothing on-line. I am conducting a research on the Chilean folklore, history and Eurapeans influences, and would like very much if you could send me more information on them and their dance group. Where are they now? Where did they performed? What happend? And the likes. It would also be very nice if you could post this information on your website, this way, anyone of us could have access to this wonderful missing information about your culture as well as, concrete documatation.

   katherine, i no am no longer in chile, and i have no expertise in chilean dance styles or culture. so i hope you don’t mind that i submitted your question to the 100-hour board for review. [click here to go there]. here is their response:

   Dear Katherine,

   Wow. You’re right–there is *no* info on Mario or Carmen on the Net. Not even if one tries various permutations of the names. There is muy poco informacion to be found on the Ballet Folklorico.

   The only information I could find on either person in the BYU lib was the following book:
   El caso Flores Tapia / Armando Castilla y Mario Aguirre.

   My theories on the matter?
   A. Mario y Carmen did not exist. They’re not on the Net; they didn’t exist. Very 1984-esque, and I don’t believe this for a minute.

   B. Mario y Carmen existed, but information about them is not widely available because
   subtheory B1-they were not that famous for their time
   subtheory B2-they were that famous, but not internationally
   subtheory B3-they were that famous, but the Net wasn’t available to publish their fame, and the info has been lost or simply not added to the Net

   C. Mario y Carmen existed. They were famous. They were marvelous artists, and they contributed a great to Chilean culture. However, Chile was in the middle of a rough time. Los Estados Unidos and la Union Sovetica were both playing a part in Chilean politics. The Cold War affected Chile. In 1973, a political coup occurred. Pinochet became dictator of Chile. Somewhere in the political madness of the times, information about Mario y Carmen may have been lost/destroyed. I don’t know when they performed for channel 13, so I could be completely off on this one. But it’s possible that, as so often happens with artists in times of political turmoil, Mario y Carmen either fled the country or were killed.

   D. Mario y Carmen lived happily to old age (maybe they’re still alive today) in their well-hidden mansion.

   I’m sorry we couldn’t find more information for you. I have emailed a Chileno who is into Chilean folklore. If he is able to provide any information about Mario y Carmen, I’ll let you know.
