Wondering why Giuliani won’t be the GOP nominee?

I think this quote from Rudy Giuliani, talking about issues like abortion, sums it up:

“Our party has to get beyond issues like that,” Giuliani said.

No way this guy ever becomes the GOP nominee. And if, because of some strange cosmic disturbance in the force, he does get the nomination, there is no way he wins the general election. You think that the religious base might sit 2008 out if McCain or Romney is the nominee? Imagine Rudy. Yikes. Electoral disaster for the GOP.

  1. Have you gone crazy? Take a look at the polls. Giuliani has a double-digit lead over any contender and is the only true leader running for president. If you want to make this election about issues such as abortion or gay marriage, you will ruin the GOP’s chances in 2008. This election is a about finding a true and competent leader to fight the war abroad and maintain economic growth at home. Furthermore, you are flat-out wrong in saying Rudy can not win the general election. 48% of Americans have an unfavorable view of Hillary and there is no way America is picking Obama over Giuliani. He is the most well known and respected politician today.

  2. you’re speaking my language now, michael: gun control, a palestinian state, civil unions, and continuing the role of the US as a world police state (this time in darfur). if this is what giuliani stands for, count me in!

The polls of how many people have heard of Mitt Romney?

We are still pretty far out from the election. I think it is too early to tell who is going to be on the ticket. A lot can happen in a short period of time and until we get to the primaries, we can speculate and make numbers say anything that we want. Much more information needs to be presented about all of the candidates before any real statistics can mean anything.

There is even a chance that the nominees from each party aren’t in the race yet. Fred Thompson could enter in a few months and carry the GOP side while Al Gore would certainly have a shot to do the same on the Dem side if he chose.

A 2006 Fox poll showed 49% of Republicans would support a ban in their home state on abortion (except when the life of the mother is in jeopardy), while 47% would not support such a ban (see http://www.pollingreport.com/abortion.htm for a variety of polls on abortion).

The equal split in this poll in no way convinces me that a pro-choice candidate has absolutely no shot in getting the GOP nomination as this post suggests. Although I am far more prone to support a pro-life candidate, I bet a candidate’s established record to solve problems and get results will be more of an issue than their moral values because more than any other issue voters will want a solution to the Iraq war.

I have to agree that Giuliani would have to do a complete about-face on the topic of abortion in order to appeal to Republican voters.

But Giuliani would never think of doing something so unprincipled. Luckily for the GOP there are candidates who put politics above principles. Go Mitt!
