greg graffin’s ph.d
there have been rumors for about the last 10 years that he was working on something like this. greg graffin, the frontman for one of my top-five favorite bands of all-time (bad religion) was recently awarded a ph.d from cornell. you can get a pretty good idea of his work here. there is a version of the actual questionnaire he sent out to scientists here. i also recommend the video interview with graffin. i will withhold judgment on the study, since i haven’t read it.

He finally got it. That’s cool. I have been listening to BR since the early 90s. But I must admit that I am not very familiar with anything after Stranger Than Fiction. I have caught a little of The Gray Race, but even that is ancient now. But nothing can beat the older stuff. I would say the best of the “new” stuff is Recipe for Hate, which is already more than a decade old.
I have read GG’s punk manifesto and other of his writings. As an undergrad I used his text as the basis of a “new-historicist” paper for an upper-division literature course. Back in the late 90s GG was sponsoring a scholarship through BR. I thought that was interesting too. I wonder if that is still going on?

This is the most esoteric post I have every seen on this blog.
By the way, have you ever figured out why Superman would be going to hell?
yeah, i never thought about that….just took it as a given. its a weird song, but i think “suffer” is their purest and best record.
Presumably because he represents “truth, justice, and the American way” (see Superman I). This is far too conservative a goal (remember the early 1980s context) for BR to get behind.
