kind-of embarrassing typo weird statistic

found while i was searching for projected job growth by industry in the US:

You will find data on employment by detailed occupation, sex, race, and hispanic origin at ftp://ftp.bls.gov/pub/special.requests/lf/aat11.txt. These data are from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Current Population survey, a survey of households.

source: bureau of labor statistics.

i think they meant “national origin” (not “hispanic origin”). although, i’m sure one’s hispanic roots could also become an important piece of US job data nowadays.

UPDATE: thanks, steve s, for the correction. providing statistics on hispanic origin isn’t a typo, it’s just kind of weird.

It isn’t a typo. Federal regulations required the 2000 census to recognize a minimum of five races and two ethic groups (hispanic or latino, and not hispanic or latino). The actual census question about race listed eleven distinct races and three blanks for writing in another race, and the question about hispanic origin had one non-hispanic category, three hispanic groups, and a blank for writing in another hispanic group. In addition to belonging one or more races, each person can either have or not have a hispanic origin.

  2. Those use to be broken down ever further. I have my grandfathers naturalization papers. His race is listed as “Irish”. Doesn’t seem so strange to me except that he was a British subject whose parents were both from Perth Scotland - the other side of scotland from Ireland. Oh, and he hated the Irish.

Things can get mixed up easily.

So, can I officially be Swedish?

    Ryan, Yes…and Guatemalan, apparently.
