I found a sweet world politics site the other day while browsing for news about Mexico’s election.

When I was in Mexico before the presidential election, Tijuana was plastered with campaign signs, posters and billboards as far as the eye could see, lending a festive air to a traditionally mind-numbing and corrupt process that only recently became clean.

Now Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador seems to think, “Why break up the party?” Like, ever. Having refused to accept the results of the July 2 vote, he told loyal leftist protesters in Mexico City on Sunday “we could be here for years.”

But is Lopez Obrador’s traditional bully strategy going to fly anymore in a country aching for less drama and more substance in political action, a nation situated between the economic prosperity and relatively stable politics of its northern neighbors and the revolution-equals-glory mind-set of Latin America? Like people tire of bad series melodrama, the numbers of loyal protesting Obradorians are starting to dwindle — from a high of a million who turned out post-election to hear his pity-party sermons to as low as 20,000 on Sunday.

As Mitch Hedberg would say, socialists are like pancakes…

…all exciting at first, but by the end, you’re freaking sick of ‘em.
