mark cuban, meet the new york times

this post was written in 2005. it is about bad journalism, so it is always timely. — travis

my experience has shown me that reporters rarely depict their subjects to the satisfaction of the person(s) involved. they may quote you correctly, but when the story comes out it is twisted beyond anything you could have imagined in your nightmares. but my experience has been with college newspaper undergrads and lifestyle reporters for the local paper. based on mark cuban’s experience, i can conclude one of two things: (1) many, if not all, journalists suck* or (2) the new york times now employs this (low) caliber of journalist [but then i already concluded that before]

NYT headline: ”Mark Cuban Is Mad (Again). But Why?”

mark: I didnt know i was mad about anything. I guess if the NY Times says I am, I must be. But rather than me guessing how they got from interview to headline and article, I will just let the interview speak for itself.

here is his post, where he published the complete email exchange he had with the author, andrew sorkin.

*sucking as a journalist means you fail to tell the story from the point of view of the subject of the story. this is a result of being (a) too biased to approach the project with an open mind (b) too lazy to get the whole, accurate story.
