Michael Steele: Supports Stem Cell Research
Here in Maryland the Democratic candidate for Senate is running ads with Michael J. Fox against GOP candidate Michael Steele.
Well, Steele just released an ad in response. It. is. great.

Do Steele, President Bush, and other Republicans only support stem cell research to a certain point? Is there any difference between Cardin’s stance on this subject and Steele’s?
Republicans aren’t wedded to the ideology of abortion-on-demand, so there isn’t really only one “Republican position” on the issue of embryonic stem cell research.
Yes. Steele doesn’t support everything that Cardin does. Cardin supports stem cell research that destroys the embryo. Steele does not.
In Cardin’s ad, Michael J. Fox won’t even mention the word “embryonic”…it isn’t hard to figure out why.
I actually disagree with Steele on this, I think that embryonic stem cell research is ethical, with certain restrictions (for example, using embryos that would be already be discarded after IVF, not paying donors, etc).
But there may be wisdom in not starting down the path at all. The “stem cell research” amendment that is up for a vote in Missouri right now would actually legalize human cloning. So, stem cell research is a slope that gets slippery pretty quick.
