Mormon Beliefs: Missionary Work

Missionary Work

The belief in the Mormon Church is that every member is a missionary. The Lord stated in Doctrine and Covenants that if you have received the gospel into your own life, then it is your responsibility to share it. He said, “Behold, I sent you out to testify and warn the people, and it becometh every man who hath been warned to warn his neighbor.”[1] In latter day revelation the Lord says that, “This gospel shall be preached unto every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people.”[2]

Through the Prophet Joseph Smith, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was restored to the earth. Through living the gospel principles and receiving the ordinances, which qualifies one for eternal life, it is natural for one to share the joy and happiness that comes from living a righteous life. “If it so be that you should labor all your days in crying repentance unto this people, and bring, save it be one soul unto me, how great shall be your joy with him in the kingdom of my Father! And now, if your joy will be great with one soul that you have brought unto me into the kingdom of my Father, how great will be your joy if you should bring many souls unto me!”[3]

The Lord tells us that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ will be taught to every nation and people. He has, and will, provide a way for it to be accomplished, being that of newspapers, magazines, television, radio, satellites, and computers. Countries that were not open to missionary work before, are now being blessed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ through these medians and through missionaries preaching the gospel.

Members of the Mormon Church have been counseled ‘that the most powerful message is the example they set for others. People do not join the Church only because of the gospel principles, but because they feel something that begins to satisfy their spiritual needs.’[4] We each crave for ‘completeness’ for ’something that seems to be missing’. The Gospel of Jesus Christ completes our life – it is what gives purpose to all that we do – and it is what gives us happiness in this world and in the world to come.

Latter-day Mormon Prophet Ezra Taft Benson stated, “This is our [the Mormon Church's] first interest as a Church – to save and exalt the souls of the children of men.”[5]

Free agency is vital in the Lord’s kingdom, whether to accept or reject the Gospel of Jesus Christ is left up to the individual. But, each must be given the opportunity to learn about the Savior and His Church.
