See, I Told You So

About a year and a half ago I wrote:

Say what you will about baseball pitchers plunking batters, bullpen clearing brawls, or Shaq chasing down Doug Christie in an arena tunnel. But hockey as a sport is free-falling into moral oblivion.

The long standing toleration of fights, an integral part of the game according to many, led to a bloody display of “sportsmanship” Tuesday night. The Canucks’ Todd Bertuzzi punched Colorado’s Steve Moore “from behind, and then smashed his head to the ice, leaving him lying in a pool of blood.”

I was castigated by everyone, including Travis, my co-blogger here at all-encompassingly, for making the claim that the NHL was too comfortable with the violence in their games.

Today we learn that after being suspended for only 13 NHL games, the playoffs (end of the 2003-2004 NHL season), and not playing European hockey during the lockout, Todd Bertuzzi is being let back into the league.

The suspension cost Bertuzzi $501,926.39 in salary. He is due to earn $5,269,333 from the Canucks in the upcoming season.

Moore might never play again because of Bertuzzi’s vicious blow in Vancouver on March 8, 2004.

What a harsh punishment for someone who broke another guy’s neck!

I won’t act like I don’t love saying it: See, I told you so.
