NO! DVDs Obama gave British PM don’t play in UK

I figured this story had to be false when I read the headline, but unfortunately, it is not. The Telegraph reports:

Alas, when the PM settled down to begin watching them the other night, he found there was a problem.

The films only worked in DVD players made in North America and the words “wrong region” came up on his screen. Although he mournfully had to put the popcorn away, he is unlikely to jeopardise the special relationship – or “special partnership”, as we are now supposed to call it – by registering a complaint.

A Downing Street spokesman said he was “confident” that any gift Obama gave Brown would have been “well thought through,” but referred me to the White House for assistance on the “technical aspects”.

A White House spokesman sniggered when I put the story to him and he was still looking into the matter when my deadline came last night.

Some of the reaction:

NRO: “Remember President Obama’s splendid gift to British PM Gordon Brown? The UK Telegraph reports those 25 DVDs just went from thoughtless to literally useless.”

Hot Air: “Until now I thought Obama’s team had spent about five minutes brainstorming on what to get Brown. I was wrong. It was more like two minutes.”

all-encompassingly (previously): “This Administration is Ruining Our Reputation in the World Community!”

  1. The other bizarre thing is that they were DVDs. Wouldn’t a head of state have BluRay already?!

and brown gave obama a pen box made from the wood of a slave ship. gulp.

I’m sure you meant ANTI-slave ship. The HMS Gannet was the sister ship to the HMS Resolute. It was actually an incredibly thoughtful gift, as the Gannet patrolled the eastern seas from slavers coming out of KENYA. If you recall, England was onboard with the whole Anti-slavery thing long before the U.S. was, sadly.

Alright, he gave a head of state a bunch of DVDs…crass but, OK, let’s let that one pass. But he didn’t even give him ones from his OWN REGION! What an amazingly incompetent group of individuals! And you want these people to run health care?!!! They’ll prescribe Flintstone vitamins for cancer treatments! Unbelievable!
