“bus-fi” is a free internet service that will be installed on city buses in the san francisco area. the cost of this proposed program is over $1/3 of a million. with that amount of money, the city could make a dent in its legal bills from the michael newdow defense,*[FN1] and have some left over to pay for the renaming of thomas jefferson elementary.*[FN2] instead, they are going to have a lot of people using their laptops on buses, only to have them swiped by crack addicts who promptly hop out the back door and on to a pawn shop payday. but other than the cost, and the fact that it will never work, i think it’s a great idea.

*FN1: newdow claimed a minor child, of whom he did not have custody, objected to being forced to recite the pledge of allegiance that contained the words, “under god.” the supreme court dismissed the suit because newdow was not the girl’s legal guardian. also, newdow was apparently lying through his teeth, because the girl didn’t mind those words at all:

According to court records, the girl believes in God and does not object to reciting or hearing other students recite the Pledge, including its reference to God. [source]

*FN2: the teachers and administrators at thomas jefferson elementary school (who already hate america’s founding fathers, not to mention their own fathers, and men in general–but who do have a thing for trees) brainwashed their students and a bare majority of parents into removing jefferson’s name from their school because he owned slaves. no word on whether the children and parents were informed (indeed, whether the school teachers even knew) that jefferson authored the declaration of independence, and was otherwise an important and mainstream american leader at the birth of our nation.
