Thoughts on the GOP debate

I don’t really care for this format. Ten candidates. Ninety minutes total. Thirty second answers. There is some substance, but mainly of the Cliff Notes variety.

Nevertheless, like all political junkies, I have an insatiable need to share my thoughts on the subject…

Here they are:

- McCain didn’t stumble, but was creepily over-eager to talk straight into the camera.

- Romney did very well, no surprise there. He is the incredibly telegenic and articulate.

- Huckabee really, really helped himself. I think he’ll get a shot in the financial arm.

- Giuliani acquitted himself nicely. I don’t like his position on abortion either, but the “Giuliani buried himself” meme is bizarre to me (and completely wrong).

- Brownback did not come off as the religious nut he’s portrayed as by the MSM

- Gilmore doesn’t convince me that he’s the only genuine conservative

- Paul was against the Iraq War. I wish he would have laid out some specific libertarian-minded proposals.

- Thommy Thompson was my biggest disappointment of the night. He was the most inspirational speaker I saw when I was in high school attending a College Republican convention several years ago. I was hoping he would establish himself as a more formidable candidate last night.

- Tancredo was nervous, perhaps swimming in deep waters that he’s not fit for. It just seems like he’s a one issue candidate.

- Hunter was the enigma to me. He beat my “expectations” but still lacked something. A nice job overall.

And finally,

- Chris Matthews & the Politico crew SUCKED. Big time. Catholic Bishops and communion? The difference between Shia and Sunni? What do you dislike most about America? Do you believe in evolution? Good grief… And then Matthews seemed like an impatient hall monitor. “That’s all Senator…Times up!…No more time!” Sooooo annoying.

- I think most folks wished Fred Thompson was there, but he is smart to keep waiting.

(disclaimer: I lean heavily to Romney…but who knows who I’ll eventually vote for?)

The biggest post-debate surprise to me is the beating that Giuliani is taking in the conservative blogosphere.

What do you all think?
