Welcome to Mexifornia
Holy unnecessary patriotism Batman!
The U.S. flag and other patriotic clothing are now banned in a California school district.
In the wake of last week’s immigration-reform protests, one school district is taking drastic measures, banning all symbols of patriotism, both U.S. and Mexican.
Beginning Monday, the Oceanside Unified School District is banning all flags and patriotic clothing.
Hmmm… I seem to remember someone publishing a book about this recently…
This is beyond outrageous or ridiculous.
A little bit of background. I am living in Argentina right now. I love it here. I understand that I am allowed to be here by the good graces of the Argentine government. I do not have a right to be here. I do not deserve to be here. Marching through the streets with my fellow expats while waving U.S. flags would be rude and quite innapropriate. Expecting that Argentines would stop wearing sky blue and white shirts or flying their flag would be ludicrous.
Why are things so different in the United States?

Perhaps because a lot of the immigrant’s “cousins” can vote here already?
Oh, and Democrats are so backwardly tolerant.
Its a wonder they don’t go blow themselves up in a show of respect and support of Islamic suicide bombers here in the US.
Doug. I all encompassingly agree with your post. There is few people hurting more the “pro immigration” (not illegal) than some idiots applying their idiotic politically correctness or (in the case of mexicans going to rallies waving mexican flags) their short shightness. But I hope that they are a minority and even if they aren’t it shouldn’t stop anyone from doing the right thing.
I am disappointed by your utter and expressed inability to understand the other side of the argument. Perhaps, despite your whining to the contrary, your situation in Argentina is not analogous to the situation of immigrants in California. You seem like a smart man. I’ll leave it to you to ponder how.
The other side of the argument?! Are we missing something when we recognize that illegal immigrants are not native citizens of the United States. Nor are they entering the country by legal means…
The other side of the argument??
Or are you not offended when a school district bans the flag of the very Nation it is a part of? Does the moronic irony not disgust you?
Are you American?
Ryan,
I am not an American and I am offended for this idiocy. Nevertheless I don’t think that has nothing to do with the debate on immigration. It has to do with that particular people doing stupid things such as waving a foreign flag and being unnecesarely confrontational while asking (begging, I would say) to be accepted here. But blame it on their lack of education or on the WRONG education that they receive in the hands of the teachers’ union.
What I believe Maggie was trying to say is that you have to be reasonable and recognize that it is not American to round up 5% of the population and deport it or (as some suggest) starve them until they leave by themselves.
Sometimes the passage of time cures certain trespasses of the law. For isntance, if you occupy a property, even knowing that it is not yours, and enough time goes by (20 years), you acquire the property. If y ou are caught during the first year you go to jail.

Of course the situation is different. Just as the situations of different groups of immigrants differ from one another in the U.S.
I believe that the underlying principle, however, is the same: that pushing your nationality and patriotism for your home country into the face of your host country is just plain rude. Even more so if you are demanding to become a citizen/resident/equal-partner of the host country.
